The popular Bampton Charter Fair takes place on Thursday, October 27 and our kitchen will be open from 9.30am until 3pm and again from 6.30pm on the day.
The fair is traditionally held on the last Thursday of October and is one of the oldest surviving Charter Fairs in the country.
History of the fair
For centuries, the fair mainly sold sheep and cattle and was the largest sheep fair in the southwest of England. During the 1880s to the 1980s it evolved to become the famous Bampton Pony Fair, trading in Exmoor ponies.
Today, the fair continues to attract local producers of foods and livestock, crafts and traditional skills from Exmoor and its surrounding villages. The streets, church, pubs and venues of Bampton are filled with market stalls, street entertainments and live music including craft workshops, demonstrations, and a funfair.
Our new menu
To celebrate, we’ll be serving food from our delicious new menu, with dishes including a warming soup with spelt loaf and butter or perhaps you fancy some tempura battered prawns with sweet chili dipping sauce?
Our large plate dishes include pan fried fillet of hake, fondant potato, lobster bisque and spinach or roasted cauliflower and chickpea coconut curry.
Of course, we have delicious sides of sprouting broccoli, mac and cheese, creamed potatoes or red cabbage and desserts to follow, including ice-cream, sticky toffee cheesecake or blackberry and apple frangipane with vanilla ice-cream.
